This beautiful Navajo ring is an early piece created by Sunburst Handcrafts, Inc., a Navajo shop in New Mexico which was founded by Lional McKinney. McKinney later renamed the company Teme, a New Mexican Pueblo word for jewelry maker, and it was eventually purchased by the Navajo Arts and Crafts Enterprise in 2007 who still operates it today. McKinney went on to start a new company with his son Jonathan, JL McKinney Designs, LLC. The pair continues in the jewelry design business today.
Both Sunburst and Teme specialized in fine, handmade sterling silver and inlaid jewelry and this gorgeous ring is a perfect example of their expert handicraft. The ring has an asymmetrical design and features a long, marquise-shaped face that has been inlaid with wonderful semi-precious stones. Three triangular sections of blue turquoise fill one side of the ring while the other side has alternating rectangular and square sections of red coral, black onyx, blue turquoise and white mother of pearl. The sections of the stones can be seen from the sides of the ring, which adds lots of visual interest when the ring is viewed from different angles. The ring has a split shank on the sides and is finished in a smooth silver. It's an absolutely gorgeous ring!
The ring measures about a size 4 on my ring mandrel and weighs 2.6 grams. The length of the stone setting is approximately 1 inch long. It is signed and hallmarked "Sunburst" with a sun symbol for Sunburst Handcrafts, Inc. and with the letter "M" for the artist on the back of the ring face.
I love the geometric design and vivid colors in the fabulous ring! It would look marvelous worn with other Navajo silver pieces and would make a great addition to a Native American jewelry collection. It's a great piece for the woman with a smaller hand size and also makes a great pinky or midi ring. The ring is in excellent vintage condition and is ready to wear or to be gifted out of the box!
