Meet the Artisans
Working with brilliantly colored glass beads, batiked bone beads, chips of semi-precious stone, and electroplated copper wire, the young people of Zakale Creations make stunning pieces of jewelry.
The project first started as a garbage collection project in the slums of Nairobi. Recycling remains very close to the heart of the project and much of the material used is reclaimed or recycled, including the cord found inside of tires, which is used to string beads.
The Zakale Creations Self Help Group then formed as a project to teach the skill of jewelry making to the older street children living in the Nairobi slums. It now provides a sustainable income for young people who have become skilled jewelry makers.
The project has created employment for 30 youths directly and 40 youths who benefit indirectly. At the moment 10 youths have already left the project to start the same initiative in other slums of Kenya.
Zakale Creations also works with more than 300 young people from different projects in the community and the Kenya social education economic empowerment program (KSEEEP) to train them in handcrafting skills.
Zakale Creations also supports other community initiatives like women’s groups, sports, cultural activities, HIV & AIDS children orphanages, and environmental preservation activities. These groups help to keep the young people engaged in social activities that improve their lives and reduce free time for taking drugs, engaging in criminal activities, and other anti-social activities. It also helps to curb the spread of HIV in the slum.
